Seeing
a park copy another parks ideas is not an uncommon practice. I've been on
numerous rides that borrow ideas for theming or concept from major Disney
rides. Here we have a family ride based around a medieval castle and a
dragon, very similar to what's found in the Legoland parks. I'm surprised a
park of Plopsaland's quality has such a blatant idea copy. Even if a
medieval area was needed to link in with the TV shows Plopsaland is linked
to, why not theme the ride around a spell cast by a Witch or Wizard, or a
ghost.
Another
slight let down is the cars. It's a powered coaster where the train is
electrically powered around the track. The end cars on the
train are themed as a Dragon, but all the middle cars are the same as found
on standard mine train themed powered coasters. I'm pretty sure they're the same as found
on the mine train at Chessington. It couldn't have been too hard to make
them all green to keep in with the theme.
By contrast the rest of
the ride and the area it's in is splendidly themed. Good theming can go a
long way to really enhance a ride. I've seen it give a large kiddie coaster
a broader family appeal, turn an average ride in to a good one, and an
excellent ride in to a World class attraction. Unfortunately here it's just
turned a bad ride in to a passable one.
What a good
powered coaster needs is a good sensation of speed as it tears around the
track.
This
ride spends much of it's layout travelling around slowly, and never reaches
more than a moderate speed for a short time. If it went much slower I'd be
reluctant to call it a powered coaster, and say it was more like a scenic
ride. Thanks to the great theming it just passes as an attraction that will
be fun for young kids, but it fails to achieve a broader appeal like a good
powered coaster should. |
